FAQs
How does the Billings Ovulation Method (BOM) work?
BOM is a natural fertility awareness method that teaches women to observe and interpret their cervical mucus patterns to identify when they are fertile or infertile. By understanding these natural signs, couples can use it to either achieve or avoid pregnancy.
How accurate is it for avoiding or achieving pregnancy?
When used correctly, BOM is over 99% effective for avoiding pregnancy, comparable to hormonal birth control. For achieving pregnancy, it can significantly increase the chances of conception by timing intercourse with the most fertile days.
How long does it take to learn the method?
Most women get a basic understanding within one cycle, but it’s best to have at least 3-6 months of charting with guidance from a certified instructor to gain confidence and accuracy.
What’s the difference between BOM and other fertility awareness methods (FAMs)?
BOM focuses solely on cervical mucus, while other methods (like Sympto-Thermal) also track basal body temperature and cervical position. BOM is simple, doesn’t require temperature-taking, and is highly effective when followed properly.
What does cervical mucus tell me about my fertility?
Cervical mucus changes in response to estrogen and progesterone. When it becomes clear, stretchy, and lubricative, it indicates peak fertility and ovulation is approaching. When it disappears or becomes thick and sticky, it signals infertility.
Can BOM help identify hormonal imbalances or reproductive health issues?
Yes! Abnormal mucus patterns can indicate issues like low progesterone, PCOS or anovulation (lack of ovulation). Many women have uncovered hormonal imbalances through charting.
Is it effective for women with PCOS or postpartum?
Yes! Women with PCOS may have irregular or long cycles, but the BOM helps them recognise true ovulation. In the case of being postpartum and or breastfeeding, it helps identify returning fertility, even before the first period.
Does it work if I have irregular cycles?
Yes! Unlike calendar-based methods, BOM works regardless of cycle regularity because it is based on real-time biological signs, not predictions.
